This is the configuration that almost never comes up for sale. Subaru offered the turbocharged 2.5 XT Limited with a five speed manual transmission, but the overwhelming majority of Limited buyers ordered the automatic. A loaded, leather trimmed XT Limited with three pedals is one of the hardest combinations to find in the entire 2005 to 2009 Outback run, and the pool of clean, unmodified, documented examples shrinks every year.

The Powertrain

Under the hood is the EJ255 turbocharged 2.5 liter Boxer four, factory rated at 250 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. The 3.0 liter six cylinder Outback was never offered with a manual transmission, which means the turbocharged 2.5 XT was the only way to get a big engine Outback with a clutch pedal.

The manual cars also use a different all wheel drive system than the automatics. With the five speed manual, Subaru fitted a viscous coupling locking center differential with a fixed 50:50 front to rear torque split. Automatic XT models used an electronically managed transfer clutch instead. Enthusiasts hunt the manual specifically for this reason. It is mechanical, predictable, and there is no torque converter sitting between the driver and the turbo.

Ownership and History

This car has spent all 20 years of its life in California and has never been titled outside the state. Delivered new in June 2006 and registered in Sunnyvale, it stayed with its original owner for 16 years and 92,726 miles, an average of just 5,774 miles per year. It has remained in the Bay Area continuously ever since, most recently in Los Altos, where the last owner averaged under 4,000 miles per year.

At 111,673 miles on a 2006 model year, this car has averaged well under 5,600 miles per year across two decades, roughly a third of typical use. There is no rust.
